Experience/Education

Dr. Portley is a transition specialist at the Northeast Regional Education Cooperative in Las Vegas, New Mexico. In this position, he develops and oversees transition program development and professional development for teachers throughout the Southwest in the areas of classroom management and instruction, with a focus on students with disabilities receiving special education. Over the course of his career, he has provided transition services to numerous schools as a consultant within the Bureau of Indian Education and public schools. In addition, he has worked as a resource teacher, a special education coordinator, and a research assistant.

Dr. Portley is a member of several professional associations and serves on the Board of Directors for the Council for Exceptional Children as well as the Special Education Advisory Board for the Bureau of Indian Education. He is committed to supporting academic engagement for American minority students and students with disabilities.

Dr. Portley received his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Oregon, his master's degree in special education from Pennsylvania State University, and his PhD in special education from the University of Oklahoma.
