Afterschool Math Centers: Learning Through Purposeful PlayThe key goal of this course is to prepare afterschool instructors to engage students at a high level in different math-related activities, build their problem solving and collaboration skills, increase their desire to learn, and ultimately extend their understanding of math. Through choice, students in math centers are able to direct their own learning. Specific content goals for the math centers require a high degree of planning and should be connected to what students are learning during the school day, and to grade-level standards.

Investigating Afterschool
Science Through InquiryInquiry combines the process of discovery with scientific knowledge. Students use what they know to design and conduct investigations, in order to understand science better. The key goal of this course is to provide afterschool instructors with everything needed to be equipped to help students learn science through doing science, which is the essence of inquiry.

Using Your Afterschool Program
to Build Skills in the ArtsThe key goal of this course is to prepare afterschool instructors to engage students in the arts, build their skills in the arts through projects, and connect the arts to other academic areas. Through guided practice, students learn art through the exploration of different concepts. Specific content goals for the arts require a high degree of planning and should be connected to other academic areas.

Utilizing Technology to Discover
and Solve Real-World ProblemsBuilding skills in problem solving is done through systematic practice. In identifying a problem, it is important to isolate the main issue and the underlying issues, and then brainstorm possible solutions to the challenge. The key goal of this course is to provide afterschool instructors with everything needed to help students build skills in problem solving.

Teaching Literacy Through Read
Alouds in Afterschool ProgramsThe key goal of this course is to prepare afterschool instructors to engage students in reading, to model fluent expressive reading, and to build important literacy skills such as comprehension. In the book selection process, instructors are taught how to build additional activities around the content of the read aloud book. Specific content goals for the practice of reading aloud require a high degree of planning and should be connected to what students are learning during the school day, and to national literacy standards.
