New Curriculum Searchable Databases Help Afterschool Programs Across the Country

The National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning at SEDL and the Program in Education, Afterschool & Resiliency (PEAR), at Harvard University and McLean Hospital, have released two new online databases for afterschool literacy and mathematics curricula. Catherine Jordan, director of the National Partnership, says, “This type of resource will help afterschool educators make good programmatic decisions that balance the need to meet academic goals and provide engaging activities that capture students’ imaginations.”

The two databases allow users to search for curricula by grade level that meet the following characteristics:

  • Align to national standards
  • Are research-based
  • Consist of sequenced activities
  • Contain scripted materials
  • Culminate in a final student project
  • Have been formally evaluated

Users may also search for curricula that link to other subject areas and meet staffing considerations. Harvard University professor Dr. Gil Noam, who is director of this project, says, “The public can be assured that the selection was inclusive and independent and that it will provide afterschool and summer programs added tools for teaching, mentoring and learning.”

Each curriculum product includes information related to alignment to standards, research base, staffing needs, cost, and planning as well as contact information and a description. A database featuring science curricula developed last year by the National Partnership and Lawrence Hall is also available. You can access the databases at www.sedl.org/afterschool/resources/curriculum.html.
