SEDL Staff to Present at NAESP Conference in San Antonio, TX

Deborah DonnellyOn April 3rd 2006, SEDL Program Associate Deborah Donnelly, PhD, will conduct a session at the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The session, Using Afterschool to Ignite Learning, will highlight ways that academically enriched afterschool programming can contribute to student achievement.

"Ongoing staff development is an essential to building a successful program,” says Deborah. "In addition, afterschool activities should be aligned with the goals of the school day curriculum. We have found that principal involvement is key to coordinating the development of afterschool staff and establishing a working relationship between them and the daytime classroom teachers."

In light of the importance of campus leadership, Deborah has invited principals from two sites the National Partnership has identified in its investigation of the use of promising practices to support student learning: Rich McFarland of Monmouth Elementary in Monmouth, Oregon, and Mary Treaster of South Hutchinson Elementary in South Hutchinson, Kansas. Both Rich and Mary are enthusiastic about their programs, which are widely perceived in their communities as having a positive impact on students.

"In spite of demographic shifts that have increased our population of at-risk students, our school continues to demonstrate academic success," says Mary. "During the last testing cycle our students reached the Kansas State Standard of Excellence in math, science and social studies. And on local assessments, all student groups showed growth in the areas of math and reading."

Rich confirms that tying training to standards is essential, and that instructors often need guidance in this area. "We need staff development that connects tightly to math and literacy," he says.

The NAESP Convention and Expo, Take the Reins of Leadership!, runs from March 31 to April 4. For more information, visit the conference site. We invite you to join Deborah, Rich, and Mary in San Antonio for a rich discussion about afterschool learning.
