Immersion Presents

Immersion Presents is a multimedia program designed for formal and informal settings that engages young people in the excitement and adventure of ocean exploration. Founded by oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard in 2002, Immersion Presents broadcasts live expeditions from places like the Black Sea and the site of the Titanic wreckage. Curriculum packages built around these expeditions consist of hands-on activities such as making model volcanoes and exploring the layers of the ocean. Related expedition resources such as mission logs, photo galleries, interactive features, and message boards, dramatically expand the learning experience for youth.

Design Overview

Immersion Presents focuses on Dr. Ballard’s oceanographic expeditions and other ocean-related research topics such as dolphin communication. There are seven curricula, each of which consists of 8–12 hands-on activities. Included in each activity guide are leader notes that provide additional background information, discussion questions, links, and suggestions for implementation. Participants can choose from a large library of expedition videos or tune in to the live broadcasts to launch or supplement their work on the activities.
  • Activity Types: Sequenced activities, hands-on learning, collaboration, and group discussion
  • Materials/technology required: Computer, high-speed Internet access, materials for hands-on activities
  • Program Length/Duration: 45 minutes for each activity session (8–12 activities within each Adventure Series curriculum)
  • Site Adoption: More than 50 Boys & Girls Clubs and 30 Immersion Partner Sites that include educational service centers, museums, aquariums, and school districts
  • Special considerations: At this time, training is available only through the Boys & Girls Clubs partnership and Immersion Partner Sites

Instructional Approach

Utilizing multimedia tools to engage young people and enrich their learning experience, Immersion Presents takes a thematic approach that is multidisciplinary and hands on. The range of tools and materials, from video and interactive games to design challenges and group discussion, appeals to different learning styles.

Educators who are Boys & Girls Club leaders or are associated with any of the Immersion Partner Sites may be able to attend Immersion Presents trainings and obtain additional support in implementing the activities through monthly conference calls, community message boards, etc.

Consideration of Special Student Populations

Through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice and Boys & Girls Clubs, Immersion Presents has been reaching young people from high-risk and high-need populations. This program has been recognized not only for crime prevention, but also for developing literacy skills, integrating deep science content, and introducing youth to career professionals who can serve as role models.
