Teaching Experience

Some familiarity with basic PC software and applications would be advisable. Software designed for handhelds is typically easier and more intuitive than software for standard computers.

Planning and Preparation

Educators should familiarize themselves with the basic functions and software applications on the handhelds, i.e., calendar, simple text or word processing. In addition, before initiating an activity, educators should read through all parts of the lesson plan thoroughly to be able to anticipate questions and challenges young people may encounter.


  • Software: Many free downloads are available.
  • Computers: Handheld electronic devices: Palm Pilot or Pocket PC.


The average cost for a handheld device is $200; external keyboards are $60.
