Teaching Experience

Formal teaching experience is not required for implementing these projects. Depending on their capability and the level of difficulty, young people may be able to do the work themselves with little assistance. However, it is recommended that educators who are using OWIKITs in a structured program become familiar with the robotic technology and associated academic concepts in order to effectively support the participants and make the most of the potential for learning.

Planning and Preparation

The kits range in level of difficulty. Most projects can be led by youth with some adult facilitation. The resource guides for educators and supporting materials are designed to be easy to use with clear direction given on how to assemble the robot kits.

  • Computers and special programming software are necessary for only a few of the kits.

Kits range in price from $15 to $100. Depending on how they are assembled (i.e., if soldering is required), they may be disassembled and used again. The OWI Technology Curriculum TEACHKIT, which provides background and materials beyond what's contained in the kit, sells for $77.95. Other educator resources are also available.
