Annotation:
This three-year, qualitative case study explores the efforts of a district multicultural steering committee to create a partnership between the schools and community. The author emphasizes Òthat it is crucial to recognize the multiplicity of groups and issues that are present (in communities).Ó The author describes the committeeÕs efforts to break down the barriers to parent and community involvement. She emphasizes the importance of delving deeply into our individual conceptions about the nature of community and the role of language in including or excluding various perspectives in the discussion. She also describes the committeeÕs efforts to bring the schools into the homes and the community of the students they serve. Overall this article provides a critique of why many parent and community involvement efforts fail to produce substantive change, and offers suggestions on how to explore the underlying issues of connecting schools, families, and communities.
