Annotation:
The purpose of this report is to encourage parents to become equal partners in their children's education and to persuade school personnel to allow parents to do so. This report, with its accompanying resource guide, provides a vision for parent involvement and leadership in education. It presents research suggesting that parent involvement benefits student outcomes. It also provides readers with information and resources on how parents can become involved and become leaders in their child's school and education. The report includes five chapters and a resource section containing information on publications and Web sites. Sections describe how parent leadership has grown as a nationwide movement, gives examples of parent involvement initiatives in various cities and schools, and suggests how parents and school leaders can use parent involvement to improve their school. Throughout, the report provides tools and checklists that can be used by staff to assess the current state of parent involvement at their school. It also lists strategies that school leaders, parents, district policy-makers, and state policy-makers can use to involve parents in schools.
