Citation:Hara, S. R., & Burke, D. J. (1998). Parent involvement: The key to improved student achievement. School Community Journal, 8(2), 9-19. EJ587580.

Annotation:
The authors describe research and relevant literature on parent involvement and a program evaluation of effects of a Chicago school program implementing Epstein's model. The program involved eight third-grade teachers who initiated a needs assessment by parents and students, a workshop series, and parent instruction on reading with their children. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) measured achievement, and gains were compared between groups involved in the program and those who were not. The authors report improvement in ITBS scores. There are limitations in this evaluation study, but it has merit as a description of recommended practice and a source for questions to guide development of a parent involvement program.
