Response to Intervention (RtI) in Secondary Schools
This interactive session will build the capacity of school and district staff to implement RtI in secondary schools. We will examine the essential features of the RtI framework; components of RtI and its application in secondary settings; key features, issues, and challenges related to RtI implementation; and resources and tools for implementing components of RtI in middle and high school. Dale Lewis is a program associate with SEDL’s Improving School Performance program. Prior to joining SEDL in February 2009, Dr. Lewis served as director of special education for the East Williamson County Cooperative. His 18 years of K–12 public education experience include service as a middle school special education teacher and department chairperson. A certified educational diagnostician, Dr. Lewis also spent several years conducting educational evaluations and facilitating the development of individualized educational programs for students with disabilities. Dr. Lewis holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Washington University–St. Louis and a master’s degree in special education from Southwest Texas State University. He received his PhD in education-school improvement with a research emphasis in special education and academic achievement outcomes of students with disabilities in 2008 from Texas State University-San Marcos.
Ada Muoneke is a Program Associate with SEDL's Improving School Performance program. Her current work includes supporting Texas and five states in the southeastern region with Response to Intervention (RtI) and special education technical assistance. Prior to joining SEDL in October 2006, Dr. Muoneke served as a program specialist in the Student Assessment Division of the Texas Education Agency, where she worked on the development of state mandated tests and educator professional development on the administration of alternate assessments. Dr. Muoneke holds a bachelor of science degree in secondary education from Oklahoma State University, and an MEd and a PhD in special education from the University of Texas at Austin.
