The Arts

Anyone who has observed students enjoying a creative outlet has seen the sheer pleasure they can derive from such an activity. Studying the arts—dance, music, theater, and the visual arts—provides students with fun and engaging ways in which to explore, create, express, and learn. Moreover, research shows that the arts can help students develop skills and self-confidence that they can then apply to other areas of learning, thereby boosting overall academic achievement. Such benefits are especially important for low-income students, who may not have as much exposure to the arts outside of school.
SEDL staff work at all levels of the education system to help integrate the arts into teaching and learning. Our staff have experience working with policymakers, educators, and expanded learning directors to help them realize the value of studying the arts. We produce research-based resources on developing art programs and improving art instruction. We design and offer webinars and online professional development courses that busy art instructors can complete at their own convenience. We provide face-to-face professional development for state and local educators, administrators, and arts coordinators. In addition, our research and evaluation team works with grant writers, policymakers, and program directors to design and conduct evaluations of arts programs.
