Assessment

In today’s educational climate of increased accountability, assessment tools—from projects to quizzes to standardized tests—are an essential source of information. Teachers depend on assessment tools to determine students’ abilities and to make decisions about instructional practices in their classrooms. Administrators depend on assessment tools to make decisions about resource allocation from the school to the regional level. Students and their families depend on assessment results to make decisions about study goals, course selection, and school choice. Ultimately, the states depend on assessment data to determine if their educational systems are meeting established learning goals and to obtain continued federal funding for education.
SEDL helps educators develop the skills and capacity to use assessment data appropriately to improve teaching and learning for all students. We work strategically at the state and local levels to help decision makers, administrators, and teachers (a) understand, implement, and evaluate their assessment strategies; and (b) use both standardized test scores and classroom assessments for instructional improvement and accountability. We also provide research-based resources and professional development to help administrators and teachers adopt a systemic approach to aligning assessment with curriculum, instruction, and standards.
