High School Reform
At a Glance | Services | Significant Work | Products
Our nation’s high schools are in need of improvement. On the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 36% of high school students were proficient in reading and only 16% were proficient in mathematics. Moreover, students in poverty and students of color are more likely to score lower on achievement tests than the general student population. Students who leave high school without the necessary knowledge and skills are less likely to succeed in their careers and in life.
SEDL’s specialists draw on their expertise in improving school performance to support educators in their efforts to reform high schools and improve learning for all students. For example, we work through regional comprehensive centers to help state departments of education and service providers improve their systems for assisting low-performing high schools. We offer research-based professional development on implementing school change and strengthening leadership and collaboration. We offer technical assistance to help educators plan and implement high school reform and provide research-based knowledge and resources to support those efforts. In addition, we conduct evaluations to help educators monitor and assess their reform efforts for accountability purposes.
