Today's students need a strong foundation in mathematics and science if our nation hopes to compete globally and remain at the forefront of innovation in fields such as medicine, engineering, and technology. To build such a foundation, all students must receive preparation, beginning in prekindergarten, for advanced math and science concepts. Because these concepts tend to build on one another—you cannot learn algebra if you do not understand multiplication, for example—it’s important they be taught well and that students grasp each concept in turn. Without a basic mastery of math and science, students will struggle to perform everyday adult tasks and to compete in the workforce.
SEDL works with educators at all levels to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. We provide professional development, technical assistance, and resources to help educators deepen their content knowledge and adopt research-based practices. Our research and evaluation team conducts studies of math and science programs to measure their effectiveness and expand our knowledge of how best to teach these core subjects. In addition, we understand that mathematics and science are integral components of larger reform efforts, such as school improvement, and help educators make content-area improvements in ways that are both systemic and sustainable.
