Professional Development
SEDL’s Center for Professional Learning offers customized professional development to support research-based instructional practices in reading and literacy.
- What Does it Mean to Teach Reading Explicitly?: Participants learn to teach reading explicitly by examining the five components of reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Designed for K–4 teachers, staff developers, reading specialists, reading coaches, and administrators.
- Adolescent Literacy: How to Access and Comprehend Text: Participants practice using research-based instructional strategies to help students comprehend texts, think critically about what they read, and understand vocabulary. Designed for middle and high school teachers, staff developers, coaches, and administrators.
- The Professional Teaching and Learning Cycle (PTLC): This 3-day “train the trainer” session introduces participants to the PTLC, an ongoing, job-embedded approach in which teachers collaborate to plan and implement standards-based lessons. The PTLC can be used in any content area, including reading and literacy.
