Carlton Fong
Research Assistant

Photo of Carlton  FongCarlton Fong is a Research Assistant with SEDL's Research and Evaluation (R&E) program. His current work includes assisting in the national multisite cluster randomized controlled effectiveness trials of the McGraw-Hill Education Imagine It! program and Everyday Mathematics program. He is also working on the Louisiana Striving Readers project evaluation, which consists of a randomized controlled trial of the Voyager Passport Reading Journeys program. His primary roles include data analysis and investigations of fidelity of implementation.

Areas of Expertise
Mr. Fong's research interests include student learning and motivation, research synthesis, and postsecondary education. He has investigated motivational factors related to underachievement, the determinants of intrinsic motivation, and student achievement and retention in community colleges. He has also conducted a systematic review for the Campbell Collaboration with SEDL's Disability Research to Practice program.

Experience
From 2009 through 2010, Mr. Fong was a student scholar in SEDL's Disability Research to Practice program. Prior to joining SEDL, he worked at the Charles A. Dana Center as a graduate research assistant. There, he served on the research and evaluation team for the Academic Youth Development program and Intensified Algebra program, both research and development initiatives integrating student motivation with mathematics instruction. On these projects, he was responsible for data collection and analysis on issues including student motivation, teacher self-beliefs, and fidelity of implementation.

Education
Mr. Fong holds a double BA in cognitive science and linguistics with a minor in education from the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently pursuing an MEd in quantitative methods and a PhD in educational psychology with a specialization in learning, cognition, instruction and motivation from the University of Texas at Austin.
