Areas of Expertise
Dr. Raphael’s research interests include motivation and engagement, K–12 content areas (especially literacy), and the transition from elementary to middle school. Dr. Raphael has investigated how teachers motivate their students, why highly engaging teachers motivate their students, and the motivational characteristics of successful schools. She has also studied the literacy practices of K–12 teachers. Dr. Raphael has looked at college student motivation and recently wrote an article for graduate students on strategies for staying motivated and engaged throughout graduate school.

Experience
Prior to joining SEDL in September 2007, Dr. Raphael worked at the University of Illinois at Chicago examining math, science, and literacy initiatives and teacher professional learning in the Chicago Public Schools. With a team of evaluators, she provided ongoing formative feedback to the Chicago Public Schools’ Department of Program Evaluation and Office of Math and Science.

Education
Dr. Raphael holds a BA in psychology from SUNY Albany, an MA in developmental psychology from the University of Notre Dame, and a PhD in educational psychology from Michigan State University.
