Reform messages make their greatest impact on teachers who already believe that improving practice requires focusing on their students' learning. Many teachers, however, have not thought deeply about their practice in this way. The purpose of Restoring Meaning to Teaching is to engage teachers in recalling why they became teachers in the first place, and then changing their practice to make it more meaningful for children and their learning. The paper encourages teachers to be reflective about their teaching practice, and shows how focusing on student learning and engaging in collegial dialogue helps teachers restore meaning to their teaching.
