Appendix B - Population Figures for Native Americans - Southwestern Region

This 5-state map shows how five states in SEDL's region rank regarding the total number of Native Americans. Oklahoma ranks first, New Mexico ranks eighth, Texas ranks eigth, Louisiana ranks twenty-fifth, and Arkansas ranks thirty-third.

* In terms of absolute numbers, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Alaska rank first, fourth, and fifth in the nation, respectively. This order is reversed, however, with respect to the percentage of each state's population that is Native American: Alaska is first (15.6%), New Mexico second (8.9%), and Oklahoma third (8.0%).

 

This chart shows the number of American Indians and Alaskan Natives by state. AR has 12,773, Louisiana has 18,541, New Mexico has 134,355, Oklahoma has 252,420, and Texas has 65,887.
