Professional Teaching and Learning Cycle

What Is It?

To really make a difference in student performance, teachers need ongoing professional development that provides structured opportunities to apply what they learn in their daily work. Whether you want to boost student achievement in reading, math, or other core content areas, the Professional Teaching and Learning Cycle (PTLC) is a powerful yet practical process for teacher development.

Through the PTLC, school and teacher leaders select an area for improvement, typically in a core content area. Teams of teachers meet and select state standards to target, instructional strategies to teach the standards, and assessment techniques to evaluate student learning. They then develop common lessons incorporating the strategies. After carrying out the selected lessons, the teacher teams meet again to discuss their different teaching experiences and decide how to refine and improve their lessons.

How SEDL Can Help

Just for You
SEDL's team of school improvement and content specialists can create a customized 2-year technical assistance plan just for your district or school. We will show you how to implement the PTLC and create conditions for its success, the leadership roles that support it, and how to measure the use and impact of the PTLC for state and federal accountability purposes. We also can provide experts in critical content areas, including reading, math, and instruction for English language learners, among others. We will also provide you with a final evaluation that will address your accountability requirements for the use of federal stimulus funds.
