“Little to no interaction between secondary students and science researchers exists, and most research projects are not included in curriculum until several years after the projects are completed,” said Hanegan, who has worked with the STEAMER teachers before in field science academies offered by SCIMAST. “My hope is that this project will have a direct impact on how science is taught in our schools. The teachers and I are really interested in developing exciting classroom units for students about ocean waters.”

Mr. Praytor who teaches Biology, Physical Science, and Chemistry said he is anxious to hear the scientists’ opinions about the current condition of the world’s oceans and take them back to his students at Maysville High School. “And I’m looking forward to crossing a large part of the Pacific in a more personal role than as a passenger on a cruise ship.”

Newcomb said she is ready to add to the knowledge she’s gained from other SEDL programs and turn a greater understanding of the ocean’s nutrient cycle into curriculum for the classroom. “Being one of the three teachers participating in this experience is amazing.”
