Question 1:
I am curious about why nitrogen is needed
by the phytoplankton and in what abundance?
Answer:
Nitrogen is needed by all living organisms because they are a
component of amino acids. Amino acids are responsible for protein production.
Generally,
nitrogen abundance is dependent on cell size. The basic ratio used for
the amount of nitrogen needed is called the Redfield Ratio which is 106
carbons:16 nitrogens: 1 phosphorus.

Question 2:
What causes seasickness and why
do people get over it. Have you ever experienced seasickness?
Answer:
A group of nerve fibers deep inside the
ear helps people keep their balance. For some people, the motion of
cars, airplanes, and ships increases activity
of these nerves. The increased activity causes the dizziness and vomiting
of motion sickness that some people experience. Many people involved
in activities on the open waters have experienced seasickness.

Question 3:
What do you plan to gain from this experience?
Answer:
We have varied expectations. As teachers, we hope to gain more detailed
knowledge about oceanography and how technology is used to gather and
process information. The science staff is looking for a better understanding
of how iron and nitrogen are involved in the vertical migration of the
diatoms being studied.

to collect and study the phytoplankton?
Answer:
Aboard the vessel there are four different research teams. Each team
is using a combination of some of the following:
- 1 meter net
- CTD-Rosette
- MOCNESS
- VPR
- Computers
- Microscope
- Satellite Systems
- Spectrometer
- Sensors
- Transmitters
- Digital and Video Cameras
