Cooking area on the ship.Question 1:
How is the food on the ship?

Answer:
It is GREAT! Our cook’s name is Paul and his assistant is Tyson. They cook three meals a day. Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m., lunch at 11:30 a.m., and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Today for breakfast we had the choice of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, oatmeal, and fruits. For lunch we are having minostrome soup and baby back ribs with garden salad and vegetables. For dinner we are having grilled flank steak and potatoes with garden salad and vegetables.

Question 2:
Have you gotten seasick yet?

Answer:
We sadly report that two of our shipmates, Mr. Praytor and Ms. Newcomb, have been struggling with seasickness this morning. They are both in their berths trying to sleep it off. Dr. Hanegan and Mrs. Leal have not had any problems so far.

Question 3:
What are the accommodations/ living conditions on the ship?

Answer:
We were all assigned berths and a roommate. The berths range in size but we know for sure that Ms. Newcomb has the smallest berth onboard (5’x 9’). The berths have bunk beds and lockers along with a sink and a medicine cabinet. The heads are in the halls. We also have a lounge/library with a T.V. and VHS/ DVD player.

Question 4:
What are the major benefits of the projects being done throughout the ship?

Answer:
One of the most important benefits is understanding how different nutrient cycles are related, particularly the relation of nitrogen and iron in the metabolism of an organism. An organism’s ability to release nitrogen is important because it controls the ability to remove carbon. Carbon and nitrogen intakes have to be at correct levels for organisms to produce amino acids/proteins. If iron levels are stressed or low, the organism can not acquire nitrogen and that will cause its death.

Question 5:
How were these teachers chosen for the project?

Answer:
The teachers had to meet several criteria to be selected for the education crew. All teachers went through an interview and pre-preparation process. They had to show no fear of ships or being at sea for a month. They needed to have pleasant personalities and be easy to work with. As the whole crew works in large research teams, a team attitude is necessary. The teachers also had to explain how this experience could be put into the classroom. Our STEAMER teachers whether on the ship or back in the classroom are an exceptional group of teachers.
