Question 1:
Is it cool being on the ship and have you gotten seasick?

Answer:
Yes it is cool being on the ship. Once a person learns how to walk while the ship rolls it is really cool, lots of shades of blue to look at and some flying fish to entertain us.

Question 2:
Is the water really blue and have you seen any, turtles, dolphins, whales or sharks?

Answer:
The whales move past the islands during the fall season and there isn’t much to feed on so the others have not come along side the ship to say hello. So the answer is no, we have not seen them.

Question 3:
Where will you go if there is a storm out at sea?

Answer:
The design of the R/V New Horizon makes it able to take very high seas if a bad storm hits us. If the captain feels it is unsafe he will instruct us not to go out on the decks. There are four life boats with this ship. We are very safe.

Question 4:
Is it safe on the boat?

Answer:
The R/V New Horizon is a very safe ship. In fact 2 days ago we had a science safety meeting and an emergency drill. We were instructed on what equipment to take with us in case of an abandoned ship situation, which is very unlikely but you always have to be prepared. The captain, first mate, dive master, and our resident technician all have medical training. In case of an extreme emergency we can always turn the ship around and meet a medical helicopter.

Question 5:
Have you seen any unusual things?

Answer:
We have seen several species of birds not found in the U.S.A. Several teachers also saw some flying fish, and we all saw some plankton in the waves that glowed at night (bioluminescence). Also, because the sky is so clear, and there are no city lights, we can see the Milky Way very clearly.
