Question 1:
Have you found anything particularly interesting that you didn’t know before, or had never seen?

Answer:
I’m not sure where to even start on this; there have been so many things I had never even imagined. Talking to one of the scientists, Mark from Wood’s Hole, I heard lots of stories about expeditions to the Antarctic Sea, and how different things are when the water is very cold. One of the most interesting things to me is learning about how the scientists actually go about their job. There is no book to look in, there is no teacher to ask; you have to come up with the answers yourself, and sometimes you even have to come up with the technology needed to even start to answer the question. It has also been fun learning a little about the physical aspects of how a ship works. Practically everything is different, and it’s all interesting.

Have you found any undiscovered organisms?
Question 2:
What kind of interesting technologies have you gotten to use in your studies?

Answer:
We have three main tools to sample the ocean, the MOCNESS, the VPR, and the CTD. All three gather information, some in the form of video and measurements of water characteristics, some taking actual samples of the ocean at specific depths. We also use a one meter net that is pulled through the water at shallow depths to filter the water and see what is there. Inside the labs, we use various machines to analyze the material we have gathered. Sometimes we carefully filter and then check for levels of chlorophyll, sometimes we scan for florescence (light given off), and sometimes, with the larger plankton especially, we use a binocular microscope to view the material.

Question 3:
What kind of food do you eat?

Answer:
We have two cooks, Paul and Tyson, Paul being the senior cook. We eat great! We haven’t had a meal yet that wasn’t excellent. There is always a variety to choose from, and the cooks usually have a vegetarian alternative. Sunday night is always something special, one time we had prime rib and king crab, another time we had huge steaks. Lunch is usually less of a big deal, with soup and sandwiches, but even the sandwiches are great; Reubens, BLT’s, that sort of thing. Breakfast, if you get up that early, is always great; eggs fixed several different ways, sausage, bacon, fresh fruit, hot cereal, cold cereal, you name it, it’s probably there.

Question 4:
Have you found any undiscovered organisms?

Answer:
We have found things that we could not identify, but it’s very unlikely that they are unknown. Mostly we have been concentrating on organisms that are identified, but poorly understood. We are trying to find out how they survive in this kind of environment.

Question 5:
Are you ready to come home yet?

Answer:
This isn’t a yes or no kind of question. There are some things that I am looking forward to back at home….. my own bed, for example. It will be nice to see friends and family again. But truth to tell, I’m still having too much fun to want to leave yet.
