Saturday

It is Saturday and out here it isn’t any different from a Monday , Sunday or any other day. It is amazing how fast a week goes with a steady busy routine. For me it is like a Saturday at home because it is laundry day and cleaning day, my family would be shocked, I vacuumed today. With about 28 people on the ship the one washer and dryer do get a workout. Part of our routine is stopping to watch the sunrise if you are up early enough and absolutely stopping to watch the sunset. Our captain guarantees a green flash every night if there isn’t total cloud coverage, so according to him there has been a bright green flash as the sun sets each evening. One of the folks on the ship said they could see it with the binoculars but I haven’t seen it on this trip. It does exist,. I’ve seen it once before. We seem to be falling into a very comfortable pattern of everyone being able to joke and kid with one another and yet when someone is off reading or just watching the sea and sky we try to be aware when folks just need some alone time. It isn’t like you can take off on a walk or even go to your room. Remember most of us have roommates.

Last night it rained briefly when we were finishing drawing water samples from the CTD, around midnight, when a few of us went out to look at the sky, it was so clear. I could actually see many of the individual stars in the Milky Way it was awesome, we just stood there watching. Please realize that when you are on a ship it rocks and the stars move back and forth. I was able to draw a constellation that formed a rocking horse and it rocked. I may not be able to see the published constellations, but I sure can make them up.

Depending on the speed we are able to travel at tonight we should probably cross the date line tomorrow. That is kind of wild, we have moved our clocks back twice since we left Honolulu and this will move it back a day. That means instead of being 7 or 8 hours earlier than the folks back home I’ll be back to today. When I think of date lines in that way it is just plain weird. It seems as if going back to yesterday could only happen in the Twilight Zone but it will happen to us tomorrow.

Have a great holiday weekend.
