The days are rolling one into another separated by sunrise
and sunset. The sun rises.....the sun sets…the sun rises…the
sun sets. I find that I need a calendar just to find out what weekday
it is. Pretty stressful, more than you might think……..not!
Today has been a slow day but full of work. We steamed till 12 noon
today and then stopped for station 17 and the first operation was diving.
I am tired of typing because I just emailed all my family. I missed
my nephew’s and niece’s birthdays. They were so sweet;
they said they would forgive me if I brought them a present from Hawaii
(smart kiddos). I am sitting here looking at the port hole and seeing
the horizon sandwiched between sky and ocean. I guess I am not feeling
very poetic today or is it that I am just hungry. The crew members
have been working on the ship’s decks. They sand all the rust
spots they can see, then they put an acid of some sort to eat the rust,
then they let it sit for a day, then they primer it, and then paint
it. The weather has been cooperating and they are working pretty fast.
What I truly dislike is that it has blocked the bridge deck where I
like to sit, see the ocean view, read, and/or meditate. I was going
through some of the pictures we have taken, and we really do have a
nice collection of unique pictures. I can’t wait ‘til I
take them home and share them with friends and family, and my Chihuahuas.
I was just called out to see a ship on our port side. It turned out
to be a Coast Guard ship. Tracy was telling us that they can board
us if they wanted to. That will bring some excitement, but it will
also cut into our schedule and it is tight enough as it is. Tracy has
started doing research that requires samples every hour and I have
been invited to participate in the joy of obtaining water samples and
running the tests each hour. Joy, Joy!!! Well, what can I say; it keeps
me out of trouble. Oh, I almost forgot! There is a Cribbage Tournament
on board. It’s just for fun—no money. The winner does get
bragging rights! Most everybody has been taken in by this card game.
The masters John B., Fred, and Mark have taught many of us to play.
The tournament has rules and you can find them posted with electrical
tape on a door. There is also a New Horizon Cribbage Association that
will arbitrate any disagreements or answer any questions. We have a
winner’s and a loser’s bracket. Unfortunately, I was not
a player when the tournament began, but seeing them play is bringing
out the competitive edge. Ha, Ha, Ha!
