Mississippi Counselor Crisis Response Materials


SECC will continue to provide technical assistance to the Mississippi Crisis Task Force for the revision of "When Tragedy Strikes" and training for all school counselors in the state, as identified by the state counseling contact.

2015

June

On June 22, SECC staff forwarded to Gail Simmons, director of Career, Counseling, and Support Services at MDE, the final edits to the manual, “When Tragedy Strikes.”

May

Gail Simmons, MDE director of Career, Counseling, and Support Services, approved final edits to the content of the “When Tragedy Strikes” manual on May 28. Anestine Hector-Mason, AIR partner staff member, is waiting for final revisions and additions to the appendix, which will be included in the final document to be submitted to MDE by the end of June.

April

Gail Simmons, director of Career, Counseling, and Support Services at MDE, provided additional feedback to Anestine Hector-Mason, AIR partner staff, on revisions and additions to “When Tragedy Strikes.” The suggestions will be incorporated in a final version, which will be provided to the team in May.

March

MDE team members and Gail Simmons, director of Career, Counseling, and Support Services, provided feedback to Anestine Hector-Mason, AIR partner staff member, on revisions and additions to “When Tragedy Strikes,” on a conference call March 30. The suggestions will be incorporated in a final draft to be completed April 13, with the second draft to be sent to the team by May 1.

February

The MDE team and Gail Simmons, director of Career, Counseling, and Support Services, met with Glenda Copeland, SECC program associate, and Anestine Hector-Mason, AIR partner, to review the revisions to “When Tragedy Strikes.” They also identified additions needed to complete the resource to provide guidance for counselors in the state in the event of a crisis or emergency situation. Further revisions will be reviewed with the team in March.

January

AIR staff member, Anestine Hector-Mason, and Glenda Copeland, SECC Georgia state liaison, have completed editing and updating information in the document, “When Tragedy Strikes.” The MDE and SECC team and Gail Simmons, director of Career, Counseling, and Support Services, will meet in February to review the revisions and begin the development of a training plan for counselors in the state.

2014

December

Gail Simmons, director of Career, Counseling, and Support Services at MDE, sent SECC a revised copy of “When Tragedy Strikes” on December 8, 2014. SECC staff and AIR partner staff, Senior Researcher Anestine Hector-Mason, have begun working on editing and updating information contained in the document. A February 2015 date has been established for meeting with the Mississippi team to provide feedback on the training and materials.

November

Glenda Copeland, SECC program associate, and Anestine Hector-Mason, AIR staff member, continued to confer with Gail Simmons at MDE regarding the development of the crisis management professional development project. She indicated that she would have materials for Hector-Mason to begin working with in December. A February date has been established for meeting with the team to provide feedback on the training and materials.

October

On October 14, Gail Simmons, of the MDE, provided an update about the current status of the crisis management project. She indicated that counselors who are on the team have not been able to devote time to the rewrite, and that has kept the work from moving forward. She is holding a meeting with her whole counselor advisory group in mid-November and will have a better understanding of how to proceed after that time.

September

SECC continues to work with the MDE counseling crisis team on the revision of training for crisis situations in the state. Anestine Hector-Mason, AIR partner, researched examples from other states and districts that can be useful to the group in identifying content to include in the revised resource.
