College and Career Ready – Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts Instructional Support Videos
A new SEDL video series is helping to demystify the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards. More than 45 states and territories have adopted the Common Core State Standards, designed to prepare students for success in college and the workplace. State education agencies are working to implement the standards by 2015. The new video series is being developed by SEDL's Southeast Comprehensive Center in collaboration with the states in its region. The videos address the ELA CCSS that the states have identified as needing support to help their districts, schools, and teachers understand and implement them. Each video addresses the learning progression of knowledge and skills that are necessary to meet the standards across grades in order to stimulate thinking about what needs to happen in instruction in previous grades that will enable students to achieve standards for the current grade level. In addition, by addressing the learning progressions, the videos also focus on how instruction and learning in the current grade will influence what happens in the grades that follow as students encounter more complex iterations of the standards. Although not intended as guides on how to teach the standards, the videos provide specific examples and illustrations to show what instruction could like in order to address the standard. The focus is on the students and using more effective practices to provide them with multiple means of access and engagement in learning now and in the future.

2015
September
During the September quarterly meeting, SECC staff discussed how the remaining videos would be processed. The CCSS ELA video project will not be continuing in Year 4.
August
CCSS English language arts (ELA) script 1.RL.1 and 1.RI.1 are currently under external content review. The team will meet in September to discuss the Common Core video process.
July
SECC has secured the services of a video editor who will begin working on editing the videos in August. Another script was created for CCSS ELA 1.R.I. After the review process is completed, SECC staff will develop keynote slides. The video recording is anticipated for early September.
April
SECC staff member Danny Martinez is working on editing the six videos that were filmed during the months of February and March. This includes ELA 4RL.5, 1SL.1, 2W.5, 4RI.5, 7L.4, 6W.1, and 7RI.1.
March
SECC staff completed filming of six videos. The videos that were recorded included the following ELA standards: ELA 1SL.1, 2W.5, 4RI.5, 7L.4, 6W.1, and 7RI.1.
February
SECC staff completed filming of the video that is based on the poem Casey at the Bat. Five videos are being scheduled for filming in March.
January
SECC staff, Danny Martinez, imported the script into the teleprompter in preparation for filming the next video. The next video, Casey at the Bat, will be filmed on February 4, 2015.

December
SECC staff are preparing to film the next ELA video in February 2015.
November
Keynote slides are in the video processing stage. SECC staff are also conducting a review of resources for writing new scripts for additional standards.
October
Four ELA scripts are at the video processing stage. SECC staff met to discuss how to implement more effective instructional technology strategies for the videos.
August
The Keynote slides for ELA 7RI.1 were approved and moved to the video processing stage. Keynote slides for ELA 4.R.I.1 are currently in the final review process. ELA 6.W.I and 2.W.5 are awaiting additional citations.
July
Two Keynote presentations for ELA 4RI.1 and 7RI.1 are in the review process. A new script for ELA 6.W.1 was completed and is in the review process. Staff are making edits to the completed Keynote presentations, reviewing the new script, and completing additional presentations.

Scripts are in the review process. The team is making final preparations to send keynote slides through the review process.

SECC staff began work on the keynote slides for the scripts for ELA 4RI.1 and 7RI.1. A new script for Writing Standard 5 for grade 2 (2.W.5) was completed.

SECC staff edited and approved two new scripts for 4RI.1 and 7RI.1. These scripts will be presented using the new video format.
March
A new video for Hurricanes, ELA CCSS 3.RI.1, was released on March 7. Final revisions were completed for the script for ELA 7.RI.1, Frederick Douglass. In addition, a revised version of Casey at the Bat, ELA 4.RL.5, was filmed.
February
SEDL staff finalized work on captioning for Hurricanes, ELA CCSS 3.RI.1; 4.RI.1; 5.RI.1. SEDL staff and RMC partner staff also held a phone conference to review the videos and discuss ways to shorten the length of the videos.
January
The video for Hurricanes, ELA CCSS 3.RI.1; 4.RI.1; 5.RI.1, is now in the captioning stage.
2013
December
Staff from SECC reviewed the video for Hurricanes, ELA CCSS 3.RI.1; 4.RI.1; 5.RI.1. The video was given final approval to proceed through the video production process.
November
After receiving feedback, SECC staff reviewed the video for Hurricanes again. Feedback was provided on the suggested revisions. The SECC leadership also met with RMC partner staff to discuss additional support with the development of CCSS ELA lessons and scripts.
October
The video for Hurricanes was placed in preflight, and SECC staff reviewed the video. The SECC staff continued to work on storyboards for completed scripts.
September
SECC staff worked on revisions for two scripts. The scripts are for ELA CCSS, ELA 3.R.I.1; 4.RI.1; 5R.I.1 and 6.R.I.1; 7.R.I.1; 8.R.I.1. In addition, SECC staff began working on storyboards for the scripts.
August
The video for ELA 9-10 R.L.5; 11-12 R.L.5 was approved in the Common Core State Standards video series. The video is now active on the SECC website. In addition, two ELA CCSS scripts have been sent to SECC partners for review and editing of content.
July
The video for ELA 9–10 R.L.5; 11-12 R.L.5 was approved and is now ready for captioning. Keynote slides were approved for ELA 3.R.I.1; 4.RI.1; 5R.I.1. A script was finalized and is now ready for review by the RMC review team.
June
The final version of the script for ELA CCSS RL.5 for grades 9–12 was placed in preflight for approval. Production steps for the videos were reviewed and edited to ensure quality and efficiency.

During May, SECC staff finalized edits of the next ELA CCSS video, which is RL.5 for grades 9-12. In addition, SECC staff edited and reviewed scripts.

During April, the first live presentation of the ELA CCSS video for grades 6−8 (6.R.L.7, 7.R.L.7, 8.R.L.7) was completed and posted on the SECC site.
March
During March, final preparation was conducted for the first live presentation of the video for grades 6−8 (6.R.L.7, 7.R.L.7, 8.R.L.7), which will be on the SECC website.
February
During February 2013, the video for standards 9-10 R.L. and 11-12 R.L.5 was revised based on feedback from program associates. Program associates will review this video and provide feedback on the revisions.
January
During January 2013, videos for reading and literature standards grades 6–8 (6.R.L.7, 7.R.L.7, 8.R.L.7) and 9–12 (9-10 R.L.5 and 11-12 R.L.5) were completed. Program associates provided feedback for revisions. The video for grades 6–8 (6.R.L.7, 7.R.L.7, 8.R.L.7) is awaiting final approval.
2012
December
During December of 2012, Southeast Comprehensive program associates continued to provide feedback as the videos were being reworked.
November
During November 2012, a review of all videos was completed and feedback for reshooting the videos for quality control was disseminated. In addition, a new process for developing the videos was approved.
October
During October of 2012, all of the videos in the cue were edited and disseminated to the team for review. Program associates began to work on writing new scripts for the following standards: K.R.I., 1.R.I.8, 2.R.I.1, 6.R.I.1, 7.R.I.1, 8.R.I.1, 9-10 R.I.1, and 11-12 R.I.1.
September
During September 2012, SECC program associates recorded all videos. The kindergarten through grade 2 video was also re-recorded based on feedback regarding quality control.
August
During August 2012, SECC program associates completed scripts for grade 3–5 and grade 9–12 standards from June and received approval from the Center on Instruction after final edits were done. Recording was scheduled for all the videos but was postponed due to Hurricane Isaac.
July
During July 2012, SECC program associates completed scripts for grade 6–8 standards from June and received approval from the Center on Instruction after final edits were done. The recording and editing were completed for the kindergarten through grade 2 video. The video is being reviewed for quality control. In addition, the staff is awaiting copyright permission for use of a book in the video.
June
The design for the storyboard of the kindergarten through second grade script (K.R.L.1, 1.R.L.1, and 2.R.L.1) was completed. Program associates began to write new scripts for the following standards: 3.R.L.5, 4.R.L.5, 5.R.L.5, 6.R.L.7, 7.R.L.7, 8.R.L.7, 9-10 R.L.5, and 11-12 R.L.5.

SECC staff began to develop the process of designing the videos toward the end of May. They developed a script for Common Core State Standards (CCSS) English Language Arts standards K.R.L.1, 1.R.L.1, and 2.R.L.1. The Center on Instruction provided feedback and approval was given as final edits were completed. In addition, SECC staff developed a storyboard for the script.
