SECC is assisting the LDOE School Turnaround Office (STO) in efforts to support state field specialists in their work with low-performing schools and their districts. This technical assistance includes work with the STO staff to build a school effectiveness continuum that will help schools focus on best practices to enhance teaching and learning.

This project is in the following state: Louisiana.

Previous Work Updates

2012

August

SECC staff reviewed the SIG indicators selected by the Louisiana School Turnaround Office (STO), shared samples of elements from a SIG indicator rubric SECC staff developed with another SEA, and proposed providing technical assistance with refining the indicators and creating a rubric for the indicators. SECC staff also discussed the possible application of other SIG resources to the work of the office.

April

SECC staff collaborated with the Louisiana School Turnaround Office (STO) to reach consensus on the structure of the School Effectiveness Continuum (SEC) tool and to finalize its framework. Next, the School Turnaround Office will hold a work session with state education agency senior staff to discuss and determine how the tool might integrate with the STO and Recovery School District work. SECC staff will focus on developing an innovation configuration map that will be used to examine school district progress in implementing the SEC tool.

March

In March, SECC and staff from the School Turnaround Office (STO) worked together to begin development of a formative tool for matching best practices and resources to areas where effectiveness needs improvement. The effectiveness continuum will include four strands: (a) instruction and assessment; (b) leadership; (c) human capital; and (d) resources that integrate the state, district, and school level frameworks from the Office of Innovation and the STO. Next steps include finalizing key components of the four strands, building an assessment rubric and training/documentation needed for implementation, and planning and implementing training for state and local staff.

February

SECC staff met with personnel from Louisiana's School Turnaround Office (STO) to discuss support for the state's 19 field strategists in their work with districts and schools implementing School Improvement Grants. SECC will work with STO leadership to create a protocol by which field strategists can assess the quality and alignment of various programs and initiatives districts and schools may be implementing as part of their school improvement efforts. SECC staff will also assist office leadership in designing a tool linking critical strategies within the states' turnaround framework to specific sources of implementation evidence.

January

An initial planning meeting with the School Turnaround Office is scheduled for early February 2012.
