Mississippi Statewide System of Support (SSOS)

SECC is assisting the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) with development of an SSOS manual. The manual will inform staff in divisions across the department about their roles and responsibilities in providing systems of support to assist districts and schools that have been identified for improvement under the state's accountability system. The manual will be used to guide the MDE and school support teams in providing a seamless, tiered system of support to local education agencies (LEAs) and schools.

This project is in the following state: Mississippi.

Previous Work Updates

2012

August

SECC staff met with the MDE SSOS Core Group to facilitate the review of the ESEA waiver and to revise the SSOS timeline to correlate with the waiver proposal. The MDE SSOS Core Group staff and SECC will continue to develop the SSOS Operations manual so that it can be reviewed by a larger group of MDE staff.

July

SECC staff collaborated with MDE staff to plan for the upcoming August 7 SSOS Core Group meeting. The ESEA Flexibility Request will be reviewed, and the core SSOS team will develop groups of staff to begin working on the SSOS organizational manual.

May

SECC staff met with MDE Curriculum and Instruction personnel to facilitate the creation of an SSOS timeline as indicated in the ESEA waiver proposal submitted by the department. The SSOS work will include the development of a framework for delivering services to districts and schools and the creation of an SSOS manual.

April

Staff from SECC and the Center on Innovation and Improvement provided MDE Curriculum and Instruction staff with an MDE SSOS report, RtI meeting notes, and samples of SSOS manuals that were developed by other states. These documents will be distributed and reviewed by all members of the group prior to the meeting on May 8, 2012. SECC and MDE staff also collaborated on developing an agenda for the upcoming meeting.

March

SECC staff and Sam Redding from the Center on Innovation and Improvement (CII) planned with Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) Curriculum and Instruction staff for developing an MDE statewide system of support manual. The group decided that a State Education Agency (SEA) SSOS Coordinating Council will be established, and the ESEA flexibility waiver would be used as the driver for developing the manual. The Response to Intervention (RtI) notes from meetings that occurred monthly over an 18-month period and the 2009 MDE SSOS Report will be used to provide background information of previous work and to inform which key factors to include in the manual. The group determined that the SEA SSOS Coordinating Council will meet May 8, 2012, to review the documents and determine key priorities to address, develop a timeline and tasks to be accomplished, and schedule future meeting dates.
