The Afterschool Training Toolkit is a product of the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, an initiative funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Academic Improvement and Teacher Quality Programs in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Partnership is led by SEDL, Austin, Texas, and includes the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) at the University of California, Los Angeles; the Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (MCREL), Aurora, Colorado; the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL), Portland, Oregon; SERVE, Greensboro, North Carolina; Learning Point Associates, Chicago, Illinois; and WGBH Educational Foundation, Boston, Massachusetts.
The content of this toolkit is based on more than four years of research and observations in 54 afterschool programs with evaluation data to suggest an impact on student learning. The toolkit contents also draw from a review of relevant research studies and the experience and wisdom that each developer brought to the project. Their collective experience includes afterschool programming, professional development, educational research, program development, program management, and direct instructional experience with students.
The developers believe that these practices and materials will help afterschool leaders and educators create high-quality programs that will motivate, engage, and inspire students' learning and participation.
